Traditional Homemade Applesauce

  • 6 cups peeled and cored apple chunks*
  • 3/4 cup water or apple cider
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch nutmeg or to taste (optional)
  • 2-3 tbsp honey or maple syrup but only if apples are really too tart
  1. Place the apple chunks in a large, heavy-bottomed, stainless-steel pot. Add the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Simmer until the fruit becomes tender, about 20 minutes.
  3. Mash with a fork or puree apples in a food mill or blender.
  4. Cool and refrigerate.
