Smoothies, Shakes, Frozen Dessert

Whatever you want to call them, they are healthy and delicious. Sipped through a straw, they are approved by adults AND kids.

NOTE:  best if you have a high-powered blender that will pulverize everything to smooth.  Also, smoothies must be served very cold…a warm smoothie is just gross.

All smoothies serve 2.

 

Orange Carrot Ginger Tonic
Servings: 2 servings
Ingredients
  • 2/3 cup coconut milk
  • 1 navel or blood orange peeled and sectioned
  • 1 medium carrot scrubbed and chopped
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango chunks
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 1/2 tsp grated turmeric root or ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • Pinch each cayenne and salt
  • 1/2 cup ice
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients (in order) in blender jug. Blend on high until completely smooth. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve according to suggestion above.

 

Sweets and Greens
Servings: 2 servings
Ingredients
  • 1 cup cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup canned pineapple drained and juice reserved
  • 1 medium ripe frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen chopped spinach or kale
  • 1 cup each ice and water

 

Max and Olive’s Breakfast Smoothie (aka Purple Drink)
Servings: 2 servings
Ingredients
  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened coconut-almond milk
  • 1/4 cup chopped yellow bell pepper
  • 1/2 medium carrot rough chopped
  • 3/4 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 very ripe frozen banana or ½ cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1/4 cup frozen chopped spinach or kale
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder stevia sweetened
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients (in order) into blender jug. Puree until very smooth. Serve cold…with a straw. 

Recipe Notes

If you don’t have frozen banana use fresh but add a couple ice cubes.

 

Apple and Kale Smoothie (aka Dinosaur Juice)
Servings: 2 servings
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup plain whole milk yogurt or coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup milk any kind
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 small apple cut in chunks (skin on)
  • 1/3 cup frozen chopped spinach or kale
  • Dash cinnamon
  • 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder stevia sweetened
  • 1/2 very ripe frozen banana
  • 2-3 ice cubes
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients (in order) Blend until smooth. Results in light green colour, perfect for presenting ‘apple smoothie’ to kids…since apples can be green.

 

Chocolate Recovery Smoothie

Great after any workout or as a meal replacement on-the-go.

Servings: 2 servings
Ingredients
  • 1 cup milk your choice
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup frozen chopped spinach or kale not fresh
  • 1/2 very ripe frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp natural peanut butter OR almond butter OR cashew butter
  • Pinch sea salt
  • Splash vanilla extract optional
  • 1 scoop protein powder your choice
Instructions
  1. Add ingredient (in order) to blender jug and puree on high until very smooth. Add additional milk or water, if necessary, to desired consistency.
Recipe Notes

If banana is not frozen add a few ice cubes or 1/4 cup crushed ice.
